I draw directly on the canvas or paper, I have no preconceived notion before starting a piece. I would begin with a shape, a line, and develop the composition intuitively. The end result is a combination of my subconscious expression with my conscious interpretation of the image space.
For myself, this is an exciting process as I never know where the image will take me. The goal of this process is to remove my ego from the image. Instead of imposing what I think the artwork should look like, I become a vessel, or conduit, for this deeper form of expression.
I work primarily with oil on linen, using transparent glazing over an under-painting structure. Also, I work as a printmaker using both traditional materials, such as aquatint etching, as well as digital printmaking.
My work deals with the deconstruction of memory, similar to how the mind organizes feelings and memories. The image becomes a single moment, yet it is constructed over a long period of time. Forms are organic, they flow freely in the space of the piece, and find their space as a plant finds root or space in the sky.
